Prof. Dr. Tharek among recipients of 2016 Top Research Scientists Malaysia Award

18th August 2016 – A very big congratulation to the director of WCC, Prof. Dr. Tharek, who was among the recipients of Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) 2016, organized by Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM). The award ceremony was held on last 15th ­of August with The award presented by DYMM Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibuddin Shah Al-Maghfullah, the Sultan of Perak.

The TRSM is an initiative by ASM under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia, in line with its focus on fostering a culture of excellence in science, technology and innovation (STI). The initiative aims to identify and recognize the leading research scientists in Malaysia. The output of this initiative is a TRSM profile that would provide a centralized point of reference on leading scientists in Malaysia along with information on their research areas. The recognition is given to research scientists holding Malaysian citizenship & working in Malaysia whose outstanding achievements in STI have been nationally and internationally recognised.

8TH UTM University Presidents Forum 2016 delegates visited WCC

8th August 2016 – International delegates from several Asian universities had visited WCC as part of a planned campus tour around UTM for the 8th UTM University Presidents Forum.  The forum had attracted more than a hundred delegates from 19 nations including 35 Presidents, Rectors and Vice-Chancellors of different distinguished universities. The forum would be a platform to identify common issues and opportunities for research universities that would further strengthen the role and relevance of universities. The visit to WCC was one of the early program set for the forum delegates, intended to demonstrate UTM strength and expertise in the field of wireless communication and foster research networking for the above-mentioned area.

WCC Successfully Hosted Advancing the State Of The Art of MIMO (ATOM) Workshop in UTM Kuala Lumpur

4th June 2016 –WCC has successfully hosted Advancing the State of the Art of MIMO (ATOM) workshop from the 30th of May until 2nd of June 2016 in Menara Razak, UTM Kuala Lumpur. The workshop acted as a platform for ATOM research members to share with attendees recent R&D advancement related to the topic of Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies. Some of the targets set for the workshop was knowledge transfer between researchers from European countries and third-country partners in order to provide a framework of advanced MIMO solutions. Aside from hosting, WCC researchers namely Prof. Dr. Tharek Abd Rahman, Assoc Prof. Ir. Dr. Sharulkamal Bin Abdul Rahim, Dr. Norhudah Binti Seman as well as Dr. Bruce Leow Chee Yen also contributed as presenters during the workshop and had shared their latest research findings with participants. Attendees also benefited from sharing by industry players including National Instruments that had demonstrated prototyping platform for massive MIMO.

As a whole, the workshop was regarded as achieving its objective that was outlined in the ATOM project, funded under the European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 research grant.  The organising of the workshop was part of the framework agreed among research members of the ATOM project during their kick-off meeting held early this year in Lancaster University. Members of the ATOM projects include researchers from Lancaster University, University of York, University of Cyprus, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, COMSAT IIT and University of Paradeniya. The ATOM project set an ambitious research agenda to fully exploit the potentials of MIMO technologies in order to revolutionizing wireless networks with green, secure and high data throughput wireless communications.

WCC Received a Visit from Indonesia’s Examination Centre for Telecommunication Equipment

22nd May 2016 – WCC received a visit from Indonesia’s Examination Centre for Telecommunication Equipment today as part of their working visit to several universities in Malaysia. Professor Ir. Dr. -Ing Eko Supriyanto from IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre, had initiated the visit to WCC for the visitors who are keen to have a look at research works in UTM’s telecommunication centre.

The visitors were brought to Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and Wireless Industry Emission (WIE) laboratories, anechoic chamber as well as product’s showcasing room in WCC. From the visit, several discussions took place regarding the testing of commercial equipment for public safety. The visitors were interested with the inspection work carried out by WCC’s industry partners though the SAR and WIE laboratories. The two laboratories respectively tested signal radiation levels from off-the-shelf mobile phones and communication towers located in close proximity to populated areas. The visit ended with the visitors signing WCC’s guest book and posed for a photograph with WCC staffs.

Prof. Dr. Tharek Conferred With the Companion Order of the Crown of Perlis by His Highness Raja of Perlis

18th May 2016 – Prof. Dr. Tharek Bin Abd Rahman, the director of WCC, has been conferred with Darjah Setia Mahkota Perlis (S.M.P.) or the Companion Order Crown of Perlis by His Highness Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail in conjunction with the Raja of Perlis 73rd birthday. The investiture ceremony, which was held yesterday’s morning at the Royal Palace of Perlis’s throne hall saw a total of 250 recipients of state awards and medals. Prof. Dr. Tharek was nominated for the award based on his illustrious long-serving track record as an academic leader in addition to being a prominent researcher at national and international levels in the field of telecommunication. Prof. Dr. Tharek close relation with industry players also lay the groundwork for numerous collaborations between public agencies and the private sectors that subsequently contribute to the advancement of telecommunication engineering field, notably in the area of wireless technology. Congratulation to Prof. Dr. Tharek for his achievement.

WCC researchers won best presentation awards at the 2012 GUP colloquium

17th May 2016 – Three of WCC researchers won best presentation awards for their exceptional research project demonstrations during Research University Grant (GUP) 2012 colloquium held today. Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Sharul kamal Bin Abdul Rahim won the Best Oral Presentation award while both Dr. Mohd Haizal Bin Jamaluddin and Dr. Leow Chee Yen had each snatched the Best Poster Presentation award. The colloquium was organised by UTM’s Research Management Centre as a platform for UTM researchers who had completed their research works under GUP grants secured in 2012 to share their findings and promote their research projects. Two categories were contested, namely oral and poster presentations. Dr Haizal and Dr. Bruce were awarded with winning trophies while Dr. Sharulkamal managed to bring home RM20,000.00 in the form of research grant for his outstanding research project’s presentation. Congratulation to all of them.

Working visit by Malaysian Army Institution of Communication & Electronic

 

30th March 2016 – The Malaysian Army Institution of Communication & Electronic, or more famously known as the Semboyan Regiment, had organised a one-day working visit to WCC on last 28th of March. The visit began with welcoming speech by WCC’s director, Prof. Dr. Tharek Bin Abd Rahman, who also presented on research activities currently conducted by WCC’s researchers. The head of the army delegation, Lt. Col. Che Wan Saipubahari, then explain to members of WCC on the main objective of the visit that is to familiarise the regiment’s officers with recent development in wireless communication technology.

The army delegates then visited WCC’s laboratories and was briefed on facilities and equipments available in WCC as well as their functions. After lunch, several technical classes were organised for the army officers to illuminate on fundamentals of recent development and application of wireless technologies. At the end of the visit, a short discussion was held to look into possible collaboration between WCC and the Semboyan Regiment, particularly on conducting short course specifically tailored to wireless technology fundamentals for army officers.

A Special Thanks To Outgoing WCC Students Society’s Committee and Welcoming Newly Elected Committee

8th March 2016 – A special event was held today in WCC to celebrate the outgoing WCC Students Society’s committee and elect new committee members for the 2016/2017 session. The previous committee were the first to hold such positions for the society, which was formed in 2015. In the event, Dr. Haizal Jamaluddin who is the advisor for WCC Students Society expressed his gratitude to the outgoing committee who had done a pioneering task in the formation of the society as well as organising programs for WCC postgraduates.

Certificates of award were then presented to the outgoing committee members by Deputy Director of WCC, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Razali Bin Ngah. WCC Postgraduates also casted vote to elect their new committee. From the vote casted, five new committee members were elected, lead by Mr. Husameldin Elmobarak as the new WCC Students Society’s president. Dr Haizal shared his vision and hope that the newly elected committee could demonstrate the same commitment as their predecessors and initiate new ideas to support the growing number of postgraduate students.

3rdMarch 2016 – WCC received a visit by several engineers from National Instruments (NI) Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. on the first of March as part of their planned visit to the faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), UTM. The team of engineers was originally attending an industry talk given to FKE’s final year students along with conducting a job interview session for the students. They were then brought to WCC and was greeted by WCC’s senior lecturer, Dr. Bruce Leow Chee Yen who took them to WCC’s laboratories and facilities. The group of engineers, which include Mr. Jeff Kellam, who is a distinguished chief engineer in NI, was impressed with the facilities and research activities carried out by WCC’s researchers. Talk was also held on areas where NI engineers and WCC researchers could potentially collaborate. The visit ended with a photograph session between the NI engineers and WCC researchers.

About the ATOM Workshop

The workshop on “Advancing the State of the Art of MIMO: The Key to the Successful Evolution of Wireless Networks” is hosted by the Wireless Communication Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and supported by the EU H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015 ATOM Project 690750. Speakers from the consortium insitututions, namely Lancaster University, University of York, University of Cyprus, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, COMSAT IIT, University of Paradeniya will share with the audience the recent R&D advancement related to the topic of Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)  technologies. 

MIMO technologies have been envisioned as a key to the successful deployment of next generation networks, which are challenged by many practical constraints, such as spectrum scarcity and dynamical wireless environments. The ATOM project will set an ambitious research agenda to fully exploit the potentials of MIMO technologies for revolutionizing wireless networks. Particularly the overall objective of ATOM is to accelerate the transfer and deployment of research knowledge between European countries and third-country partners in order to provide a framework of advanced MIMO solutions for realizing green, secure and high data throughput wireless communications.
