26th April 2018: – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) through WCC’s UTM-Ericsson Innovation Centre for 5G (IC5G), Axiata Business Services under the brand Xpand, Ericsson Malaysia plus Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have come together to organised Hack for Good. The event is the first end-to-end cellular Internet of Things (IoT) hackathon in Malaysia, aiming to accelerate potential applications of IoT, incorporating complete ecosystem from device, connectivity, cloud platform and mobile applications. The Hack4 Good was open to university students as well as professional from Malaysia. The program had kicked off with call for ideas in February via 2-minutes pitching videos submission throgh online registration. The organisers had received 138 entries, and top 11 finalists were then selected. The finalists had attended a pre-hack workshop to prepare the participants with necessary skills in developing prototype within a 30 days period.

WCC postgraduate researchers teamed up and bagged first runner up award in the Hack4Good Competition

Judging of the proposed projects was conducted on 24th of April with winners announced on the next day. Two categories were contested, namely for students and professionals. Winners from the hackathon had walked away with RM51,000 worth of total prizes and express tickets to post-hackathon incubation programme by Ericsson to turn ideas into businesses. WCC postgraduates team was among the finalist and had bagged the first runner-up award in the student category, with their narrowband (NB)-IoT conected water quality monitoring solution.
